There’s nothing quite like the Oregon Relays under the lights. As night falls, the stadium transforms into a full-blown spectacle as overhead lights pulse to the rhythm of the music, lasers slice through the night sky, and spotlights track the athletes as they race. When the leader nears the finish line, smoke cannons erupt in celebration, and the announcer’s voice booms across the stands, calling out each name like a grand finale. It’s more than a high school track meet – it’s a high-energy, professional-grade experience that leaves you breathless whether you’re on the track or in the crowd.

Last night Mercer Island High School’s Sophia Rodriguez raced under those conditions and claimed victory in the Girls 2-mile race at the Oregon Relays on April 4, 2025. Finishing with an impressive time of 10:16.95. Her performance ranks as the second-fastest in meet history, narrowly missing the all-time record of 10:16.0. Rodriguez was powered down the final stretch by an enthusiastic group of teammates, who chanted “So-ph-ia!” in support. Congratulations Sophia!
